In July of 1999, our management team had a vision to deliver online mentoring. Across our nation, there was a clear and present need for improved educational programs for our youth. If technology and the Internet can be used to buy books, trade stocks, and earn a college degree, then was virtual volunteerism to assist in youth career development possible? Certainly! James Green and William Kern, Jr. initially discussed the feasibility of founding and managing a nonprofit focused on online career-development for youth. James and Will are former colleagues from Booz Allen Hamilton in McLean, Virginia. Mark Gilleland, a fellow Georgia Tech alumnus of James', was soon introduced to the idea. Mark led the way to our concept of a virtual community with the aim of career research and management for youth. The key final ingredient was the technology talent to bring it all together, James Platt. James Platt is the third Georgia Tech alumnus on the founding team. With the passion and talent of this founding team, we launched NetMentors.Org on August 1, 1999. Our motivations and initial inspirations for founding NetMentors.Org is based on using technology to deliver career development mentoring to teens worldwide. We are working to capture and apply the professional talents and philanthropic spirits of active professionals. Together with our NetMentors, we aim to inspire and support the educational process of young people everywhere.
